Nantucket geotube project is a pragmatic approach to coastal resilience
On behalf of the Siasconset Beach Preservation Fund, sponsor of the geotube project protecting a critical roadway and neighborhood in Nantucket, we would like to highlight several areas where we differ from your April 13 editorial, “Rising sea levels call for state leadership.”
First, however, we’d like to note that we fully agree with the need for coordinated state action to address coastal flooding and erosion across the Commonwealth. A consistent, statewide approach would bring greater predictability to the regulatory process and help advance long-running coastal resilience efforts toward solutions grounded in science.
Our approach is designed to responsibly balance environmental protection, public safety, and fiscal stewardship. Rather than constructing a hard seawall, the project uses sand-filled geotubes, permitted under current law, that offer important advantages. When properly maintained, the sand cover mimics natural erosion processes by nourishing adjacent beaches, while the geotubes themselves remain fully removable if performance benchmarks are not met or conditions change.
